The UNMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation saw two longtime faculty members retire.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last summer, Paul Esposito, MD, retired from UNMC and Children\u2019s Hospital & Medical Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Esposito joined the department in 1987 and, with his focus in osteogenesis imperfecta, spent most of his time at Children\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am proud that I have been able to help bring new colleagues, new techniques not only to our region but in some ways to have an impact on the quality of care for kids around the world,\u201d Dr. Esposito said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kevin Garvin, MD, chairman of the department and long-time colleague of Dr. Esposito, said, \u201cDr. Esposito has retired from an exceptionally busy, productive and exciting career at Children\u2019s Hospital. He has been a true leader in every sense of the word at Children\u2019s Hospital and in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Susan Scherl, MD, retired from UNMC and Children\u2019s in January after joining the department in 2002.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Said Dr. Garvin, \u201cDr. Scherl has been a fantastic member of our department. She has also been a national leader in pediatric orthopaedic surgery with several leadership roles on regional and national committees.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Garvin said Dr. Scherl was the first woman to chair the Pediatric Society of North American Annual Meeting in 2016 and, in 2022, she served on the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section of Orthopaedics Leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDr. Scherl has been a dedicated mentor and teacher for many UNMC residents and medical students,\u201d Dr. Garvin said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Scherl spent much of her time in trauma at Children\u2019s. One of Dr. Scherl\u2019s fondest memories from her time at UNMC and Children\u2019s was \u201cgoing to a concert at University of Nebraska at Omaha and seeing a patient I had treated for 15 years, playing in the orchestra. It was great to see him out in the world, thriving and doing something he loves.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Scherl is looking forward to traveling, reading and playing her flute in her retirement.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
