{"id":96325,"date":"2023-02-15T13:50:00","date_gmt":"2023-02-15T19:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=96325"},"modified":"2023-02-15T14:37:15","modified_gmt":"2023-02-15T20:37:15","slug":"new-faculty-spotlight-anne-maxwell-md","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/02\/15\/new-faculty-spotlight-anne-maxwell-md\/","title":{"rendered":"New faculty spotlight: Anne Maxwell, MD"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>Anne Maxwell, MD, is a new faculty member at UNMC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Name: <\/strong>Anne Maxwell, MD<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hometown:&nbsp;<\/strong>Bainbridge, Georgia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Current position(s):&nbsp;<\/strong>Assistant professor, UNMC Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery; otolaryngology-head and neck surgery and neurotology physician, Nebraska Medicine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Previous positions, including residencies and fellowships:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Medical school at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Aurora, Colorado<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fellowship in neurotology at UCLA House Ear Clinic, Los Angeles, California<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Professional and medical interests:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u00a0practice the full range of otology and neurotology, ear and skull base surgery, including surgical and medical management of chronic ear disease and perforations, ossicular chain disorders, hearing loss including cochlear implantation, facial nerve disorders and skull base tumors, including acoustic neuromas and meningiomas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My research interests include lateral skull base tumor management, 3D temporal bone modeling, resident surgical training, cochlear implantation techniques and temporal bone trauma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How I fell in love with my specialty:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My interest in neurotology began in residency, with early experience in the temporal bone lab and grew with clinical and surgical experience managing hearing loss, especially with cochlear implant surgery. With ear pathology \u2013 affecting hearing, taste, balance and facial nerve function \u2013 a patient can become isolated from his or her community. What richness of life is lost if one cannot experience the joyful sound of a child\u2019s laughter, a thrilling orchestral passage, a smile between friends or a simple conversation in a crowded restaurant? Restoring those senses and providing patients with an avenue to reconnect with their communities gives me a sense of purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I love that many ear and skull base surgeries are not routine and require real-time critical thinking and improvisation when presented with unexpected diseases or unusual anatomy. I am constantly amazed by the delicate intricacy of the anatomy and function of the ear. Through continued engagement in clinical and translational research, I strive to contribute to my field alongside other academic neurotologists. Practicing medicine in the academic setting here allows me to assist the next generation of otolaryngologists, honoring the efforts of my own excellent mentors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Professional memberships:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>American Neurotology Society<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Three things people may not know about me:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I use skills developed via my theater major to establish rapport with my pediatric and adult patients and to creatively solve medical and surgical dilemmas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I use legislative and advocacy skills gained by working for the U.S. Congress in my current role as vice chair of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Board of Governors Legislative Affairs Committee.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I aim to live a healthy life, practicing that by training for and running marathons in my free time.
