class=\"wp-block-heading\">Distinguished Scientist<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Distinguished Scientist Awards, which are sponsored by the chancellor, recognize researchers who have been among the most productive scientists at UNMC during the past five years.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Name:&nbsp;<\/strong>Benjamin Teply, MD<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Title:<\/strong>&nbsp;Associate professor, UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Oncology and Hematology <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Joined UNMC:<\/strong>&nbsp;July 2017<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hometown:<\/strong>&nbsp;Omaha<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Please describe your research focus in three words or less:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Improving cancer care<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why is research important in the world today?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The field of medical oncology has made many advances in recent years, yet there are so many ways that we need to improve our care for our patients.&nbsp;The tools that I use in the clinic today were made possible by yesterday\u2019s clinical trials.&nbsp;Those clinical trials were made possible by basic and translational research.&nbsp;The research being performed today will lead to new diagnostic and therapeutic tools to improve the lives of our patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>My research will make a difference because:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In prostate cancer, we now have multiple classes of therapeutics that can be employed.&nbsp;Yet we don\u2019t have good ways to optimally select which combinations or sequences of therapies to use.&nbsp;In our research, we are exploring mechanisms of secondary resistance to several commonly used therapies \u2014 essentially looking for ways to get more out of established medicines.&nbsp;In the future, we envision a new understanding of the underlying drivers of resistant prostate cancer and new clinical procedures to select patients for specific therapy combinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The best advice I\u2019ve ever received is:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take your vacation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Three things you may not know about me are:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I previously worked on PSMA-targeting nanoparticle technology that made it to phase 2 studies in advanced prostate cancer patients.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I watched well over 100 Red Sox baseball games (mostly on TV, some in person) during the 2004 season.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When I was a kid, my dream job was building model aircraft for NASA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Teply is an associate
