McGoogan Health Sciences Library Rare Book Collection. The book topics include anatomy, surgical instruments, obstetrics and women&#8217;s health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Eight new selections are on display in the Wigton Heritage Center\u2019s American College of Surgeons Rare Book Gallery on Level 5 of Wittson Hall. View images and learn more on our online exhibits page at <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9PtoCCefjO\">https:\/\/t.co\/9PtoCCefjO<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bSMezhMsWM\">pic.twitter.com\/bSMezhMsWM<\/a><\/p>&mdash; McGoogan Library (@UNMCLibrary) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UNMCLibrary\/status\/1630974823940648961?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 1, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The featured anatomy books were created by Scottish anatomists:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>John Bell&#8217;s &#8220;Engravings, explaining the anatomy of the bones, muscles, and joints&#8221; (1794) includes macabre illustrations created by Bell, reflecting the popularity of Gothic literature of the period.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In &#8220;A system of anatomical plates&#8221; (1825), Bell&#8217;s student, John Lizars, created illustrations beautiful and precise in their execution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Man: his structure and physiology&#8221; (1857) was written by the infamous Robert Knox, known for his role in purchasing bodies from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.historic-uk.com\/HistoryUK\/HistoryofScotland\/Burke-Hare-infamous-murderers-graverobbers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">murderers Burke and Hare<\/a> for use at his anatomy school. Knox&#8217;s book is a flap anatomy book with movable parts to display different layers of anatomy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Surgical instruments are features of three of the books from the Hiram Winnett Orr, MD, Rare Book Collection, on permanent loan from the American College of Surgeons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;Surgical Operations: In the Pentateuch and other distinct surgical operations&#8221; (1666) by Hieronymous Fabricius ab Aquapendente highlights illustrations of surgical instruments used in trepanation and lithotomy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Johannes Scultetus, a contemporary of Fabricius, is represented with &#8220;Kheiroplotheke seu D. Joannis Sculteti . . . Armamentarium chiurgicum&#8221; (1656), featuring illustrations of surgical instruments and images of how to use them for trepanation, tracheotomy and mastectomy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;The works of that famous chirurgion Ambrose Parey<em>&#8220;<\/em> (1634) is an English translation of French surgeon Ambroise Par\u00e9&#8217;s work on everything from surgery to distillation to cryptid animals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The final two selections feature women\u2019s health and obstetrics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Yoshitora Utagawa\u2019s triptych, &#8220;Fubu no on o shiru zu&#8221; (&#8220;Realize one&#8217;s parental love&#8221;, circa 1880), features Japanese woodblock prints of the ten lunar months of gestation. The beautifully colored images include flowers representative of each month.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;The ideal woman, for maidens-wives-mothers&#8221; (1915) by Mary Ries Melendy contains information and advice for the different stages of women&#8217;s lives.&nbsp;Melendy graduated from a homeopathic medical college and an eclectic medical college in Chicago. After graduation, she taught on diseases of women and children at a naturopathy school in Chicago.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/wigton.unmc.edu\/RareBooks\" target=\"_blank\"
