Paul Laikko is on the cusp of retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But trying to pin down the \u201cwhen\u201d of retirement makes him start thinking about his young patients and their success stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He thinks of hearing a child say their name \u2014 or call out a sibling\u2019s name \u2014 for the first time. Or seeing Mom and Dad light up when their child can finally say, \u201cI love you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those kinds of highlights \u2014 plus feedback from the kids and their families, as well as his colleagues \u2014 make Laikko want to stick around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laikko was recognized for his involvement in so many of those success stories through his work as a speech-language pathologist at UNMC\u2019s Munroe-Meyer Institute as the newest recipient of the Gold U Award. The award typically is given out six times a year to employees who consistently deliver outstanding performance and service to the university. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just an acknowledgement as to how lucky I have been,\u201d Laikko said of the award. \u201cTo be able to work here and the support we get, to our department, to the university system. It\u2019s a nice honor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laikko has been a speech-language pathologist at the Munroe-Meyer Institute for 35 years. Over the course of his career, Laikko\u2019s handled cases involving pediatric feeding and swallowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now he\u2019s become a go-to person to treat severe speech sound disorders. The bulk of his caseload is made up of patients with childhood apraxia of speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laikko treats children \u2014 typically between 2 and 4 years old \u2014 who aren\u2019t making progress in therapy at school. Many of these patients struggle getting their brains to tell their mouths how to move and make the right sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laikko takes a motor approach. He starts with something a kid can do, like opening their mouth and making an \u201cahh\u201d sound. If they close their mouth slowly, it almost makes the word \u201con.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laikko uses a hybrid approach, mixing in-person and virtual appointments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laikko and his colleagues at the Munroe-Meyer Institute also collaborate with the Scottish Rite and Westside Community Schools. Those collaborations are where planning and training of the next generation takes place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Communication is a key piece of cognitive development and socialization, Laikko said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat impacts these children\u2019s ability to function at their maximum level rather than getting stuck falling behind and not being able to talk and socialize at a young age,\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019re helping them get started.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/a><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
