Volunteers are welcome to sign up<\/a> for the med center\u2019s annual personal electronic waste and paper shredding event<\/a>. This is the med center\u2019s most popular sustainability event, where colleagues can bring their e-waste, personal documents and other \u201ctechno trash\u201d from home to safely dispose and ensure they don\u2019t end up in a landfill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event is Tuesday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Wednesday, April 19,  from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will be at the UNMC Grounds Building (Annex 23) in Lot 17, located at 4650 Jones St.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past three years, the recycling effort has diverted nearly 50,000 pounds of material, received countless nonperishable food items to be donated to the Maverick Food Pantry and supported the Truhlsen Eye Clinic and Ronald McDonald House with donated eyeglasses and pop tabs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volunteers will be asked to help unload items from attendees\u2019 cars and sort them appropriately, with assistance from the campus recycling vendor. It\u2019s a great opportunity to get outside, network with fellow colleagues and help heal the planet during Earth Month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volunteers will receive a free sapling and wildflower seed packet to take home and plant. Details are available on this website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The med center is offering numerous activities to celebrate Earth Day, which is April 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 27 from noon to 1 p.m., a tree planting ceremony will commemorate Arbor Day and maintain the med center\u2019s commitment as a Tree Campus USA. The ceremony will be located in the green space west of the Harold M. and Beverly Maurer Center for Public Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Graham Herbst, community forestry specialist for eastern Nebraska, will discuss the benefits of trees, especially for community resilience and health. This year, a chinkapin oak tree will be added to the campus canopy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
