{"id":99524,"date":"2023-05-11T01:50:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-11T06:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=99524"},"modified":"2023-05-10T16:53:55","modified_gmt":"2023-05-10T21:53:55","slug":"med-center-will-hold-biking-event-on-may-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/05\/11\/med-center-will-hold-biking-event-on-may-17\/","title":{"rendered":"Med center will hold biking event on May 17"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>The UNMC Office of Sustainability and the Center for Healthy Living will hold an event May 17 from noon to 1 p.m. at the green space by the ice skating rink to offer information about biking in Nebraska.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrom a health and wellness perspective, bicycling is a great form of exercise and enjoyment,\u201d said Kyle Meyer, PhD, dean of the UNMC College of Allied Health Professions. \u201cAnd of course, it also serves as a functional and sustainable mode of transportation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At next week\u2019s event, Vince Asta from Ponderosa Cyclery will talk about bike maintenance, and Julie Harris from Bike Walk Nebraska will share information about bicycling infrastructure in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 12:30 p.m., guest speakers will give a short presentation, and they will be available during the rest of the lunch hour to answer questions. Information will be available about UNMC\u2019s TravelSmart program and other <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1XSM5GM2m39uCABHJWYh_Kpsab2bBf_er\/view?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">biking resources<\/a>, along with an electric bike that riders can test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other opportunities available during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/stories\/bike-month.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Bike Month<\/a> include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Taking part in the <a href=\"https:\/\/drawdown.ecochallenge.org\/participants\/join?referral_code=631d620c-04b5-4e49-b54b-e39ca8145327&amp;team_invitation=true&amp;team_id=unmc-nebraska-medicine-biking-challenge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EcoChallenge<\/a>. Participants can track their biking mileage and contribute to the med center\u2019s commuter mileage now through World Environment Day on June 5. noopener\">ravelSmart program<\/a>, which provides a variety of resources to <a href=\"https:\/\/livegreennebraska.com\/travelsmart\/bike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">support biking<\/a> to work, including access to secure bike parking, showers, lockers, <a href=\"https:\/\/livegreennebraska.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Daily-Rate-Flexible-Parking-Map-01.10.19.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TravelSmart daily rate flexible parking<\/a> and the free <a href=\"https:\/\/livegreennebraska.com\/travelsmart\/emergency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emergency ride home program<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Commuting to work or other activities by bike reduces pollution, saves money on gas and other car-related expenses and supports a healthy lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If everyone who lives fewer than five miles from their workplace rode their bike to work just one day a week, it would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umt.edu\/transportation\/bike\/about\/benefits\/#:~:text=Environmental%20Impact\">reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 5 million tons per year<\/a>, which is the equivalent of removing one million cars from the roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the 2022 Sustainability Engagement Survey conducted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/livegreennebraska.com\/\">Office of Sustainability<\/a>, 38% of employees and students live fewer than five miles away from work, but only 2% commute using a bicycle.<\/p>\n<div style=\"display: none;\"><a rel=\"nofollow\"
