Biography

Ms. Lori Carlen became a nurse mostly by chance. In 1986, the small community college she lived near as a military spouse had a limited number of programs. The previous college credits she had, combined with her interest in science and helping people led her to the LPN program. After completing the LPN program in 1987 and starting a family, she went back to class and obtained an ADN in 1991. She obtained a BSN in 2007, and a Master’s in 2014. She has spent most of her nursing career in the Emergency Department, where she has worked as a staff nurse, preceptor, and charge nurse. Over the course of her career, she developed a passion for providing education to nurses. This has led from providing continuing education such as ACLS, PALS, TNCC, and ENPC to developing courses for new ED nurses, and now to a budding career as an academic nurse educator. She currently shares her time between UNMC, St. Elizabeth, and Bryan. She serves as a clinical and didactic instructor at UNMC, the ED CNS at St E’s, and as a continuing nursing education instructor at Bryan. She works every 3rd weekend 12 pm to 12 am at the St. E’s ED as a staff RN to keep her skills current.
