Career Outlook

Career Options

Nursing is a career that offers many options for both men and women. These range from caring for newborns to caring for the elderly. UNMC graduates work with new moms, the homeless, in intensive care units, ER's, clinics and elementary schools. Some have chosen to become "travel nurses" or volunteer internationally. Other graduates with advanced nursing degrees write prescriptions, teach nursing, work with computer technology to improve patient care or manage health care agencies. They are employed throughout Nebraska and across the country.

Salary and Benefits

Nursing offers excellent salaries. The new graduate Registered Nurse (RN) can earn from $46,000/year to $59,000/year depending on the location and specialty. There is a nursing shortage that is predicted to last many years and jobs are plentiful. Wages are expected to go even higher in the next five years. In addition, the federal government and hospitals are offering incentives such as repayment of nursing student loans and large bonuses.

Nurses can choose flexible hours and work 4, 8, 10, or 12 hour shifts. Many prefer to work 3 days/week and receive full-time benefits. This allows them to spend more time with their friends and families. Many hospitals offer "weekends only" or "weekdays only" options. Benefits also often include medical, dental and life insurance along with disability, vacation, sick leave, tuition reimbursement, and retirement.

Advanced Career Options

In addition to a Baccalaureate degree, the UNMC College of Nursing also offers graduate programs. Many of our graduates are practicing as nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, teaching at universities or working at various clinics, hospital systems or organizations across the nation. They are highly respected in their communities, specialty areas and places of employment.
