A Message from Dr. Smith
Welcome to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. As a part of the University of Nebraska Medical Center, our mission is to improve the health of Nebraska through premier educational programs, innovative research, the highest quality patient care, and outreach to underserved populations.
Our department includes four divisions or specialty groupings: General Ob/Gyn, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology and Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility. In addition, we have a Research division which includes four women’s health basic science laboratories.
Ob/Gyn is a part of the core curriculum for our medical school, and as such each medical student at UNMC rotates through our department in their third year. Elective courses are also available for 4th year medical students. In addition, we have a residency training program which has been fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education since its inception. Our four-year residency program provides specialty training in obstetrics and gynecology through sites at The Nebraska Medical Center, Nebraska Methodist Hospital, and the Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
Our faculty physicians are members of a group practice, UNMC Physicians, which is the largest multi-specialty group in the region. They provide inpatient care primarily at The Nebraska Medical Center. These two organizations have recently joined to become Nebraska Medicine. The bulk of our outpatient care is provided at the Olson Center for Women’s Health, a multi-disciplinary facility located on UNMC’s main campus. We also see patients at eight other clinic sites throughout the city and region.
Through the generosity and vision of the late Dr. Leland and Dorothy Olson, the Olson Center for Women’s Health was founded in 1993. Now in its 21st year, the Olson Center includes a large outpatient facility with over 15 specialties, an off-campus outpatient facility, and provides support for basic and clinical research, novel clinical programs, and innovative educational programs for the patient and community.
