Proper sitting posture and comfort can improve a patient’s sitting balance, reduce the chance he/she will attempt to change positions unassisted due to discomfort, and enhance their physical function through appropriate postural support. Physical and occupational therapists can make recommendations on proper seating options for a given patient. Depending on his/her impairments, a patient may need complex features such as customized wheelchair seating, while others may benefit from relatively simple modifications to his/her bedside chair.
