Research Goals

Effect of diabetes on expression and function of calcium cycling proteins Long range goals:To (i) better understanding molecular mechanisms by which the activity of ryanodine receptor calcium-release channels and sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase decreases during diabetes, and (ii) identify therapeutic strategies modalities to slow the progression of this "diabetic heart muscle disease."

Significance: This research is especially important because it could lead to improvements in the quality of life for diabetic patients and help control the escalating economic cost medical expenditure and loss productivity - estimated by the American Diabetes Association to be over  $245 billion in 2012
