As Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Dr. Shaffer’s administrative responsibilities are broadly devoted to student academic services and the academic success of students in the pharmacy professional program. In addition to activities intended for developing professional attitudes and values for students, additional responsibilities include student recruitment and admissions, student organizations and professional affairs.
Research Activities/Clinical Service:
Dr. Shaffer’s research is focused on Pediatric Personalized Medicine, which is the use of appropriate medications based upon a child’s age and genetic profile. As Director of the Pediatric and Adolescent Pharmacology Research Unit, Dr. Shaffer conducts research in pediatric patients, examining how growth and development, along with genetics and environment, influences response to medications. Dr. Shaffer’s clinical service works with physicians and patients who have experienced an unanticipated medication adverse effect or medication treatment failure to prevent such occurrences from happening in the future.
Dr. Shaffer is course coordinator for Pharmacogenomics and co-coordinator for Pharmaceutical Care II. In addition, he provides lectures in team-taught courses in Pharmacotherapy, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and other classes throughout the UNMC campus.
