Postdoc Dr. Mohtadin Hashemi named UNMC's 2021 nominee for the The Warren Alpert Distinguished Scholar Awards for his research on Alzheimer's disease:

hashemi2.jpgAccording to the Alzheimer’s Association, 6.2 million Americans currently suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. It is a progressive disease that is universally fatal, and, on average, life expectancy is only 4-8 years after initial diagnosis. Alzheimer’s is currently the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. With increased life expectancy in the industrialized world, the problem of Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases associated with advanced age is expected to grow worse. The hallmark of Alzheimer’s is the formation of amyloid beta protein aggregate plaques in the brain, but what causes these plaques to form is not yet understood. My research focuses on understanding the biomechanisms that result in these plaque formations with the goal of creating effective preventative and therapeutic treatments for Alzheimer’s and other associated neurodegenerative diseases.
