KIMBERLY CLAWSON: Working in the field of forensic psychiatry is incredibly impactful. You get the opportunity to work with a wide variety of populations in a very meaningful way. Forensic psychiatry is a wonderful area of practice for people who really enjoy being challenged with new and different cases, and who are looking for opportunities to utilize their creativity in evaluating cases or working with patients. And our program at UNMC, our goal is to foster our fellows creativity and allow them to explore the areas of forensic psychiatry that interest them and are important to them. Our fellowship will provide an excellent foundation in the basics of forensic psychiatry, while also leaving time for the fellow to develop their own interests in the field. We highly value education and prioritize protected time for didactics, learning and professional development. One of the really special things about our fellowship is our partnership with Sarpy County Corrections. This partnership allows the fellow the opportunity to work on a true interprofessional team with legal and mental health professionals to provide much needed treatment for those individuals who have ended up in the legal system as a result of mental illness. TOM DARGY: Sarpy County has always recognized the need that we needed to improve the areas that we have for mental health in the community, and both in the court system and as well as the correctional setting. And so when Howard Liu came forward with an idea of a fellowship, it just seemed like a natural fit for us to get together and develop a partnership. JO MARTIN: The planning of this project was in the works for over a decade. There was a need within the community of Sarpy County, that community leaders came together and were excited to finally get this project off the ground. HOWARD LIU: This will be a new pipeline for a vital workforce we need across Nebraska, and I'm so thankful for all of our supporters who have advocated to make the fellowship a reality. KIMBERLY CLAWSON: It is a truly wonderful experience to be able to come together with professionals from across the mental health and legal systems, and to work together for the shared goal of diversion out of the legal system. [MUSIC PLAYING] Our forensic fellowship is a new program, and the first of its kind in Nebraska. Our foundation is a strong partnership across legal and mental health systems throughout the state, with opportunities to work in urban, suburban, and rural areas in Nebraska. We have opportunities for the fellow to operate in multiple different legal systems, including County Detention facilities, juvenile courts, diversion courts, and state hospitals to ensure a comprehensive education. [MUSIC PLAYING] Our fellow will partner with the Sarpy County Wellness Court team in a first of its kind program in the state of Nebraska. Our fellow will also have the opportunity to work with the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska, or BHECN to provide education on the forensic field throughout the state. Our fellow will also have the chance to learn about mental health policy through working with BHECN and the Nebraska psychiatric society. [MUSIC PLAYING] We have purposefully left time during the fellowship for the fellow to explore personal interests and opportunities unique to Nebraska. We want someone who is excited by the opportunity to advance their education, and discover their niche in the field by working in a variety of environments including criminal, civil, academic, and public. [MUSIC PLAYING] Our fellowship highly values education and prioritizes protected time for didactics and learning. We have partnered with the University of Colorado Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program for weekly didactics, which means that the Fellows will have exposure to and training from a large variety of experts who have worked and trained all around the country. Additionally, we have created a landmark case seminar through the Lincoln regional center, where our Fellows will meet weekly to learn about and discuss important legal cases to mental health education. During both of these educational experiences, Fellows will work with forensic psychology trainees and faculty, which is such a wonderful opportunity to get to know colleagues and to build relationships with people that you'll likely be working with in the future. MARLEY DOYLE: At BHECN we are the state's behavioral health workforce center, which means that we create and support training opportunities across the state, especially in areas of high need. By creating more training experiences and opportunities where we are able to train more students and graduate students from the state of Nebraska, who will ultimately stay in the state of Nebraska. Because of this, if we have a forensic psychiatry fellowship, we will be able to have a pathway to have more forensic psychiatrists stay in our state and meet the growing need. And what I like about Nebraska is the fact that it is very easy to live here. My colleagues are supportive, and I am able to have a fulfilling career, as well as lots to do in the area that meet my interests. It's been a great decision, and I would recommend it. KIMBERLY CLAWSON: Thank you so much for your interest in the UNMC forensic psychiatry fellowship program. If you are interested in applying can do so through AHS. And please do not hesitate to reach out to me at the contact information listed on our website with any questions. Thank you so much. [MUSIC PLAYING]
