B J Reed, PhDDr. Reed has been on the faculty of the University of Nebraska at Omaha since 1982 and has served as Chairman of the Department from 1985 to 2000 and as Dean of the College of Public Affairs and Community Service since the Fall of 2000.  Dr. Reed was appointed Interim Senior Vice Chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs in September 2011. Since 2006 he has also served as Executive Associate to the Chancellor.

He has published in numerous journals including Public Administration Review, The American Review of Public Administration, the International Journal of Public Administration, Public Productivity and Management Review, and Public Budgeting and Finance among others. He is also the author of several books on diverse topics including economic development, strategic planning, financial administration and intergovernmental management.

Dr. Reed served as President of the National Council of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA) in 2003-2004 and has previously served as chair of the Council on Peer Review and Accreditation for the NASPAA.  He has also served as a member of the National Council of Pi Alpha Alpha, the public administration honor society. He currently serves as Chair of NASPAA’s Social Equity and Data Task Force Committees.  He recently served as Co-Chair of the Mayor’s Police-Fire Study Commission.

His community service includes Board of Directors of the Omaha Healthy Community Partnership (where he served as Chair for four years) and the Omaha Community Partnership where he served as Chair for three years.  He is Co-Chair of the Hate Crimes Coordination Council.  He is also Past President of The Dundee Memorial Park Neighborhood Association. He serves on the Board of Nebraska Humanities Council and Foundation and also serves as Chair. Dr. Reed is a member of the executive committee of the Omaha Black/Brown Coalition.

He has previously served as a member of the Omaha Housing Authority Board and as a member of the Greater Omaha Private Industry Council, the 25th Anniversary Committee of Leadership Omaha, and the Chair of the Omaha City Charter Convention. He has also served as Chair of the Curriculum Committee for Leadership Omaha. 

Dr. Reed works closely with other community-based initiatives including The Neighborhood Center for Greater Omaha, the Omaha Hate Crimes Project and the Family Economic Success Initiative.  Dr. Reed has also facilitated strategic planning processes for the Urban League of Nebraska, The Omaha Home for Boys and the Chicano Awareness Center.

Prior to coming to the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Dr. Reed worked as Senior Staff Associate and Director of Information Services for the National League of Cities and also as Director of Community Development of Mexico, Missouri. He has also served on the faculty of Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

Dr. Reed is recipient of the David Scott Professorship, the Elmer B. Staats Career Public Service Award of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration, The Advancing Public Service Award from the Nebraska Chapter of the American Society of Public Administration, The Mayor of Omaha’s Partnership Award, The Young Alumni and Alumni Achievement Award from Fort Hays State University, and the Chancellor’s Medal from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.  He was inducted as a Fellow in the National Academy of Public Administration in November of 2005.
