Professional Summary

Abbey Lowe is the director of ethics and public health preparedness for the Center for Preparedness Education at the University of the Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). She co-chairs the Critical Questions and Ethics committee and is the co-director of the National Disaster Medical System Infectious Disease training program for the Global Center for Health Security. With NDMSID, she supports the development of curriculum and onsite training for federal first responders. She oversees single IRB and HRPP preparedness exercises with Special Pathogens Research Network—exercises aimed at creating processes and education on rapid review of multisite research for the network. As associated faculty in the department of Medical Humanities at the University of Nebraska Omaha, she utilizes humanities in developing ethics curriculum. Working closely with interdisciplinary programs at UNMC, she teaches a course on clinical study design and research ethics for MD and PhD students, as well as lecturing on research ethics at UNMC and UNO. Abbey has bachelors and master’s degrees in literature and philosophy.
