Hilary A. (Abbie) Raikes, PhD

Hilary A. (Abbie) Raikes, PhD is an Assistant Professor at UNMC’s College of Public Health in Health Promotion. Her career path has focused on applying the science of child development and public health to national and global issues facing young children. She has population-based early childhood data experience emphasizing globally-comparable measurements, with application as a United Nations staff member, leading a UNICEF, UNESCO, Brookings Institute and World Bank initiative on child development in LMIC. She brings to the University, a strong science background on early childhood development, including the agenda and toolkit her taskforce published for accelerating global child development progress. As a Columbia University, Mailman School of Public Health MPH graduate, Dr. Raikes developed expertise in public policy, implementation of innovative early learning projects and quantifying those impacts on children, their families and childcare providers. Raikes’ doctoral preparation was in Developmental Psychology from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. She has expertise with social and emotional development that lays the ground work for children’s thoughts and perceptions which in turn impact life-long learning and relating. Her emphasis also includes attachment relationships, maternal depression and postnatal maternal role changes, along with consideration of the larger impact of family and society on child development and wellbeing.
