Evi Farazi, PhD

Dr. Farazi joined UNMC in 2016 as an Assistant Professor in the department of Epidemiology. She was previously faculty at the University of Nicosia in Cyprus (2007 – 2015) and postdoctoral research associate at MIT (2005 – 2006). While in Cyprus she initiated various research projects in public health that relate to cancer epidemiology, smoking prevalence, the impact of the Sahara dust on public health, hepatitis B virus prevalence and antibody titer in students of health professions, and various awareness studies regarding HIV, prostate, bowel, cervical and skin cancer in Cyprus. She also completed a project on awareness of prostate cancer and screening in Nigeria. While in Cyprus, she also founded and directed the Mediterranean Center for Cancer Research (MCCR; 2010 – 2015) with the aim of increasing cancer research in Cyprus to better understand factors leading to carcinogenesis and enhance cancer prevention efforts. As director of MCCR she attended the National Cancer Institute Directors’ meeting organized in Lyon France by the International Prevention Research Institute (2013 – 2015), where she had the opportunity to network with cancer investigators from all around the world. She has active collaborations with various health organizations in Cyprus where she continues to work on projects related to cancer. In addition, she plans to expand her research to neighboring countries in the Middle East and Europe that may be sharing similar environments and lifestyles as Cyprus.
