In 1991, the Nebraska Legislature passed a bill (LB 625e) and created the Rural Health Education Network to address the shortage of health professionals in rural Nebraska. UNMC partnered with communities across the state to develop a network of volunteer faculty who serve as preceptors for health profession students during their rural rotations. This allows students to receive part of their professional education in sites away from the main UNMC campuses.
The scope of the RHEN Office expanded in 1993 to include developing programs and promoting health care careers to students from rural communities.
Today, the Rural Health Education Network is the umbrella under which most of UNMC’s rural outreach education activities are developed. Throughout the pages of our website, we hope to provide you with information about our programs. Together we continue to make a difference!
