Service Learning/Capstone Experience (SL/CE)

About

The Service Learning/Capstone Experience (SL/CE) is required of all students in the MPH program. This practicum experience is intended to contribute to the health of the population and provide students with learning and further development of public health competencies under the guidance and supervision of professionals. Service Learning (SL) is a structured learning experience that combines service with intentional learning objectives and reflection. It is centered on the principle of mutual benefit to the student and the community. The project is derived from needs identified by the SL/CE placement site to benefit the community they serve.

The SL/CE is a student-directed study supervised by a SL/CE committee comprised of at least two COPH faculty and the on-site preceptor. Students should meet with the Director of Masters Programs, Service Learning Coordinator, and SL/CE committee as needed prior to starting placement hours. Students are required to complete a minimum of 300 practical hours (divided approximately as 150 hours service learning and 150 hours capstone experience). Approval of the final SL/CE paper by all committee members and completion of all required documentation is required prior to submission of grades. All documentation must be submitted to the SL/CE course on Blackboard, in which students will be enrolled after registration.
