As people of medical science, we understand the reality that few people – especially those outside the Midwest – grow up dreaming of living in Omaha. But a closer inspection reveals the opposite should be true, especially when you consider that Omaha is home to a world-class zoo, the nation’s top-ranked playhouse and so many award-winning restaurants that it was recently named the ninth best city for foodies in the U.S. Parenting named Omaha one of the Top 10 Cities to Raise a Family, and Forbes ranked the area as the 17th best for businesses and careers. Add in a cost of living that allows coastal natives to trade in studio apartments for something requiring a riding lawn mower, and you begin to understand why so many talented people – and not just at UNMC – proudly call Omaha home.
