CO2 Laser Resurfacing

CO2 laser resurfacing is a technique for smoothing out fine wrinkles of the face caused by aging and sun damage.

How does the CO2 laser work?

The laser works by delivering short pulses of intense energy to the superficial portion of the skin which is vaporized. The vaporized skin then re-eptithelializes to form smoother skin. Redness of the skin is expected and can lasts for weeks to months.

What are the risks of the procedure?

All patients should expect some redness of the skin that lasts for weeks to months. Scarring,lightening of the skin, infection, and persistent wrinkles are all possible complications. The risks and complications are low when performed properly trained plastic surgeons trained with laser experience.

How does laser therapy for tattoos work?

A short pulse of intense laser energy is delivered by the Alexandrite Laser that is selectively absorbed by the tattoo ink in the dermis layer of the skin. The energy fragments the tattoo ink, and the fragments are removed by scavenger cells (macrophages) in your body.

How effective is the laser at removing tattoos?

The ability of the Alexandrite Laser to remove tattoos is dependent on many factors. Darker pigments such as black, blue, and green absorb the laser energy well and are more responsive to the laser. Yellow and red colors are less responsive. Amateur or self-made tattoos respond variably. Although amateur tattoos often have less ink, the ink is often deposited at different levels in the skin. Generally, all tattoos require several treatment sessions.

What are the side effects?

There is some mild pain with treatment. The pain has been described as similar to a rubber band snap. Local anesthesia is often used especially with larger tattoos. The laser may cause some temporary or even permanent lightening of the skin (hypopigmentation). The treatment may also cause minor texture changes to the skin.
