SCORE (Surgical Council on Resident Education)
The foundation of our didactic educational curriculum is based on the SCORE (Surgical Council on Resident Education). The SCORE curriculum was developed by a consortium formed in 2006 that consists of the principal organizations involved in U.S. surgical education. The curriculum was developed based on the six core competencies as defined by the ACGME. The ACGME competency-based curriculum defines the training required during general surgery residency. The curriculum is available 24/7 online with easy access from any location. The Basic Science conference schedule and the Clinical Case conference schedule are completely integrated with the SCORE curriculum.  The entire didactic curriculum for each academic year is based on the SCORE curriculum. Our residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center utilizes the SCORE curriculum as follows: Each academic year the SCORE curriculum is divided based on organ systems, disease categories and operative procedures. The topics from each organ system/disease category and operative procedures are assigned to individual residents for the entire year. The curriculum is finalized prior to the beginning of the academic year. In this way it is ensured that there is comprehensive coverage of all organ systems, disease categories and operative procedures. This curriculum is repeated annually such that each resident is exposed to the same concepts multiple times during their training.

Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS)
The FLS is a comprehensive web-based educational module that includes a hands-on skills training component and assessment tool designed to teach the physiology, fundamental knowledge and technical skills required in basic laparoscopic surgery. The goal is to learn laparoscopic surgery in a consistent, scientifically accepted format, to test cognitive, surgical decision making and technical skills with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of patient care.  Whereas in the past this was completed during the senior years of training, we now have moved this to the more junior years so that the skills can be reinforced and utilized in the care of actual patients.
