"Navigating Research at UNMC"

Paula Turpen, Ph.D. Director of Research Resources in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, will provide a virtual tour of the resources that are available to faculty, staff and students to support research. Core Facilities, Funding Opportunities, Grant Editing, ADIS, Research Classifieds and Tips, and Collaborators will be highlighted. After the presentation attendees should know what resources are available and where to find what they need to help them with their research.

Improving your Grant Proposals

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research Editorial Office presentation video to help you improve your grant writing skills. The presentation was presented by Melody Montgomery, Editorial Grants Specialist. It covers writing tips over items such as common grammar errors and activating verbs. She discussed tips for grant proposal sections. Melody looks forward to helping you write "award-winning" grant proposals.

SciVerse Scopus, recently purchased by the Office of the Vice Chancellor For Research and replacing Web of Science, combines a powerful literature search with a suite of publication and research analysis tools. The Scopus Database enables you to quickly obtain the information that you need to improve your research and publication strategies.

Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database containing both peer-reviewed research literature and quality web sources. With over 19,000 titles from more than 5,000 international publishers, SciVerse Scopus offers researchers a quick, easy and comprehensive resource to support their research needs in the scientific, technical, medical and social sciences fields. Some features that will be discussed:

Linking to full-text articles
- Author Identifier to automatically match an author’s published research including the h-index.
- Citation Tracker to simply find, check and track citations in real-time.
- Affiliation Identifier to automatically identify and match an organization with all its research output.
- Journal Analyzer provides a quick insight into journal performance.
- Document Download Manager to easily download and organize multiple full-text articles simultaneously.
- Data export via bibliographic managers such as RefWorks, EndNote and BibTeX.

Writing Productively: The Road to Academic Success

presented by Dr. Jessica Mercer. This workshop discussed the common pitfalls in academic writing, such as procrastination and perfectionism, to increase your writing productivity. Whether the task is writing a manuscript, grant proposal, or dissertation, writers may encounter roadblocks and lose their momentum. Dr. Mercer will give tips for successfully passing each stage of the writing process using time management skills and a personalized work plan. Such tips have proven effective in improving the quantity and quality of academic writing.

Creating Scientific Posters using PowerPoint

Learn how to incorporate UNMC poster guidelines with your posters created in PowerPoint. Learn how to add text, images, tables, graphs and additional tips to attract attention to your poster. PowerPoint Basics is recommended and Microsoft Charts/Graphs if you are including those elements. Bring your files on a jump drive to work on in class.

Presented by Editorial Grants Associate, Dr. Jessica Mercer. She discussed the common problems that can plague scientists’ writing such as wordiness, redundancy, and lack of cohesion. The talk also discussed how to communicate more clearly and effectively in your writing to keep the reader engaged. The workshop is designed for a broad audience, so anyone who would like to improve their writing skills can benefit.
