Size: A 54,536 square foot building housing clinical and research services. The Fritch Surgery Center has been added in the Lauritzen Outpatient Center, connected by a skywalk to the Truhlsen Eye Institute.
Building features: Outpatient eye care, a children’s eye care center, clinical research center and regional diagnostic center.
Building’s namesake: Stanley M. Truhlsen, MD, emeritus professor and former chairman of UNMC’s Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. Dr. Truhlsen is nationally recognized in the field of ophthalmology.
Services provided:
- Outpatient Eye Care: Separate clinic areas for specialty care including comprehensive ophthalmology, contact lens, cornea and external diseases, refractive surgery, glaucoma, retina and vitreous, oculofacial plastics, uveitis and ocular inflammatory diseases, pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, low vision and rehabilitation, and neuro-ophthalmology. Patient-care areas will be closely integrated with the clinical research and diagnostic center to support research studies and also provide state-of-the-art patient care.
- Carl Camras Center for Innovative Clinical Trials in Ophthalmology: A dedicated center of excellence for clinical research will enable the department to bring scientific breakthroughs to patients in clinical studies. The research team has expertise in conducting clinical trials that lead to novel therapies for a variety of eye diseases. New therapies developed by the research scientists in the Truhlsen Eye Research Laboratories, in UNMC’s Durham Research Center, also will be brought to patients in clinical trials.
- Children’s Eye Care Center: A new center for children’s eye care will provide a subspecialty referral center for pediatric eye care in our region and provide capacity for clinical research on pediatric eye diseases. It also will provide care for patients with strabismus and ocular misalignments.
- Regional Diagnostic Center: State-of-the-art diagnostic equipment, such as high resolution optical coherence tomography, adaptive optics, microperimetry, and wide field imaging and angiography, not otherwise available in the community, will be provided for patient care and clinical research.
- Optical Shop: A significantly expanded optical shop will provide patients convenient access to optical services, products and eyewear.
- The Fritch Surgery Center: An eye surgery center is part of the Lauritzen Outpatient Center, connected to the Truhlsen Eye Institute to provide maximum convenience and best possible care for patients, as well as their friends and relatives.
