Title: “A monument built for love is now a ‘Wonder of the World’”
Location: Agra, India
Submitted by
Aishwarya Prakash
Category: Students/Residents

Description:
“It is an exquisite piece of architecture that is sure to take your breath away. Scores of people throng to see the Taj every day. Actually looking at it made me realize the enormity of the structure and the amount of work that must have gone into building it. Set on the banks of the River Yanuna, the Taj is definitely a grand structure made from pure white marble.”

Location:
Ma’in Spring, Jordan
Submitted by
Carolyn Nussrallah

Title: “Latin American Farmer”
Location: Costa Rica

Description:
“Costa Rica is a poor but beautiful country. Filled with nature’s wonders, it also has some interesting, ambivalent features…our air-conditioned minivan just stopped for a short break when this local farmer showed up riding his “vehicle,” a horse. I felt that a few minutes were stolen from the tourist-crowded (see also the flags) 21st century by the 18th century.”

Location:
Hanoi, Viet Nam in Summer 2004
Submitted by Magda Peck

Description:
“Bicycles and motorbikes swarm the streets of Hanoi at all hours, following traffic conventions beyond my comprehension. Title: “Mind the Gap”
Location:
The Underground in London
Submitted by Michael Sather
Category: Students/Residents

Description:
“They say a picture is worth a thousand words. It didn’t seem so when I first took this picture. I just thought it was an interesting phrase that rang out each time the subway stopped and was painted by the gap between the platform and train. Since I first took the photo, I have heard the phrase used in many contexts:  HerHHeHto describe age gaps between generations, knowledge that is lacking, gaps between cultures, gaps between the rich and poor, and even as a way of saying good-bye to someone. This picture truly does say a thousand things; it speaks of all the gaps that we may encounter throughout life.”

Title: Untitled
Location: Paris, France
Submitted by
Carolyn Helmberger
Category: Faculty/Staff

Description:
“I took this photo in October, 2004. It gives a slight idea of the immensity of the Eiffel Tower. I think it shows that no matter what a person’s background, we can all feel small and irrelevant in the sea of humanity.”

Title: “Peace in Nature”
Location:
Cambridge, United Kingdom
Submitted by Pankaj Singh

Title: “Sliding Into Summer”
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Submitted by Susan Mendez-Eastman

“The Red Fort is the symbol of India’s golden military history, housing several garrisons of soldiers. But, it also has its own seemingly inconspicuous community of businessmen, guides and petty street side hawkers who make a livelihood out of selling products to the thousands of tourists who visit this monument every day!”

Title: “Shared Notes Cross Borders”
Location: Montego Bay, Jamaica
Submitted by Laura Bashus
Category: Faculty/Staff

“This Jamaican boy and American girl seemed to have swapped identities. The boy looked every bit the part of an American, while the girl took on typical Jamaican hair style and dress. Their involvement in a shared note speaks of our common interests even though from different cultures.”

Aishwarya Prakash

“In a developing country such as India, no one would expect to see billions of centers for the disabled and the under-privileged. This is not true. In the recent years, these children have learned to cook and study at the same time and can speak English and many other languages better than most of us. Volunteering at an institute like this one made me a better person.”

Title: “Aged Cane Worker”
Location:
Dominican Republic, Batey Contador
Submitted by Mark Hare
Category: Students/Residents

Description:
“In the countless Bateys of the Dominican Republic there live many men and women who traveled from Haiti to work in the cane fields. These men and women worked countless hours under the most extreme conditions with nothing but a machete to harvest a sea of cane. The broken down physique of this man brought home to me the consequences of a life spent harvest to harvest, most likely transplanted far from home.”
