Omaha metro could expect updated COVID boosters by next week

The US government already bought over 170 million updated booster doses.

The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved an updated COVID-19 vaccine booster that is first to directly target the Omicron strain. It is good news for many, however, people will still have to wait a few days to get the new boost against the virus. The CDC still needs to give its blessing before any new booster rolls out, which they are expected to do in the next couple days. The new doses actually need to ship out too. Depending on how long that takes, Douglas County health officials says they could roll them out at their clinics as soon as next week. A new COVID-19 booster shot is poised to roll out in time to help stave off a winter surge. The FDA authorized the update to the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. The shot targets the most prevalent Omicron strains, BA.4 and BA.5, along with the original strain. "This will hopefully give people better protection, broader protection," said Dr. Mark Rupp, an infectious disease expert at UNMC. If the CDC does not change recommendations, these new doses would only be for people who have had their two main vaccinations, either from Pfizer or Moderna. Pfizer's is open for anyone 12 and up. Moderna's updated shot is open to all adults. "And it's been at least two months since you've either finished the primary series or finished your last booster, then you would be eligible for this new, updated booster vaccine," said Dr. Rupp. The US government already bought over 170 million updated booster doses. But it is not clear if Americans will be willing to get another shot for COVID-19. Only half of vaccinated Americans have had one booster dose. Only a third of 50 and up people have had a second booster. "I've gotten the two initial shots, the two booster shots and I'll probably get a third one if it becomes available," said Dean Johnson, a Council Bluffs resident. Douglas County reports almost 60 percent of fully vaccinated resident five and older have had at least one booster. Kohll's Pharmacy says they have already ordered a batch. "Ours is expected to arrive probably on Tuesday, the 6th. We will have sign ups for it, we will have extra staffing for it," said Dr. David Kohll, the pharmacist. The US government is expected to run out of funds to buy and distribute COVID vaccines by next year. It could then be up to the private market to sell these doses. The next vaccine clinic in Douglas County is coming up on Friday. You can walk into the health department near 41st and Pacific from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All available shots for all ages will be available. But remember, the health department says the updated booster will not be here until at least next week.
