Lincoln has its Huskers, UNO has its Mavs, and now UNMC has a mascot to call its own.The University of Nebraska Medical Center said Thursday it has adopted the Labrador Retriever as its mascot.UNMC unveiled a logo featuring a lab wearing safety goggles and a lab coat.“It’s a great day to be a Lab,” said UNMC Chancellor Dr. Jeffrey Gold in a news release. “Our new mascot is a sign of student spirit at UNMC and, with its nod to our cutting-edge science, celebrates UNMC’s commitment to transforming lives in Nebraska and beyond.”A student-led effort developed the mascot. UNMC Student Regent Nicole Kent said the mascot gives students something that "connects us and something to rally behind as a UNMC community."Kent said the idea came after UNMC students talked to students at other NU campuses and realized UNMC was the only one without a mascot.Labs was chosen from nearly 50 ideas submitted.Caroline Seilstad, a UNMC graduate studies student, is credited with coming up with "Labs", based on a Labrador that used to attend campus events, and because of the breed's loyal, curious and caring nature.The UNMC Bookstore will be offering "Lab apparel" and other merchandise in the near future.
