Written by: Abiola Kosoko

As the UNMC College of Public Health celebrates 20 years of advancing public health, the college is recognizing the Heart Ministry Center as its 20th anniversary community partner for its longstanding commitment to improving the health and well-being of individuals and families across Omaha.

The recognition honors an organization whose work reflects the College of Public Health's anniversary theme, "Science. Service. Solidarity," and acknowledges the partnerships that have strengthened communities over the past two decades.

As part of the recognition, the Heart Ministry Center will receive a community partner mini grant to support its mission, as well as two days of service dedicated to volunteer work from the from the College of Public Health leadership, faculty, staff and students. This effort demonstrates the strong partnership built on shared values and a commitment to serving Nebraska communities.

Located in North Omaha, the Heart Ministry Center provides food, healthcare and pathways to long-term stability for individuals and families experiencing poverty. Through services including Nebraska's largest choice-style food pantry, a medical clinic, workforce development programs, case management and even a laundromat, the organization addresses many of the social determinants of health that influence a person's opportunity to live a healthy life.

This partnership exemplifies the College of Public Health's 20-year legacy of "Science. Service. Solidarity." Through Science, both organizations recognize that improving health requires evidence-based approaches that extend beyond clinical care. Through service, they work alongside communities to provide meaningful resources and opportunities that improve quality of life. Through solidarity, they demonstrate that lasting public health progress is achieved through trusted partnerships and a shared commitment to serving others.

As the college marks its 20th anniversary, recognizing partners like the Heart Ministry Center celebrates not only the accomplishments of the past, but also the collaborative relationships that will continue to shape the future of public health.
