Professional Bio

Özalay’s research focuses on the integration of functional and structural neuroimaging to understand brain connectivity in both human and rodent models. His work leverages advanced MRI techniques—including diffusion microstructure modeling and task-based fMRI—to investigate the role of subcortical structures, such as the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), in affective and addictive disorders. At MMI, Özalay leads a project examining multimodal BNST connectivity in individuals with alcohol use disorder, combining high-resolution diffusion imaging with network-level functional analyses.

Prior to joining the MMI team, Özalay developed and implemented computational tools for connectivity analysis and has recently expanded his work to include AI-based applications in neuroimaging. He actively contributes to open-source projects, mentors students, and promotes neuroscience literacy through public outreach. His interdisciplinary approach draws from a background in neuroscience, electronics, and clinical sciences, allowing him to bridge technical innovation with clinically relevant questions in mental health.
