Drs. Hetland, Buchanan named AAN fellows
The UNMC College of Nursing’s Lynn Buchanan, PhD, associate professor, and Breanna Hetland, PhD, Gail and Jim Anderson Professor in Nursing and associate professor, will be inducted as Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing in October.

Hesse tabbed as NNA nurse of the year
Jenna Hesse, EdD, assistant professor at the UNMC College of Nursing – Northern Division, will be named the Nebraska Nurses Association Nebraska Nurse of the Year at the NNA’s annual convention in October. The NNA Nurse of the Year Award recognizes outstanding achievement in nursing and honors a nurse who has made a positive impact on the quality of nursing care and the nursing profession through clinical practice, education, administration, or research. This statewide recognition reflects Dr. Hesse’s contributions to undergraduate and graduate nursing education, simulation, scholarship, and the advancement of nursing practice.
Benda named third year Jonas Scholar
Kristina Benda, PhD, instructor at the UNMC College of Nursing - West Nebraska Division, has been named a third year Jonas Scholar from the 2024-26 cohort. As a third-year member, she will have access to resources and learning events that will suport faculty development.
Rowland selected for NU DEAL program
Sheri Rowland, PhD, was selected for NU System's Developing Excellence in Academic Leaders (NU DEAL) program. The program's two year curriculum helps participants develop their leadership skills, expand their networks and explore key issues and challenges facing the University of Nebraska system and higher education.
Hepburn receives two national awards
Kirsten Hepburn received two awards from the 2026 National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences at their annual AIM AHEAD Health Data Science Training Program meeting in July.
