Active Shooter Training & Plans

Trained and Prepared
We offer several methods of training and preparation to help members of our campus community respond to potential situations involving an active shooter or an armed intruder.
-
Run, Hide, Fight training: UNMC uses this approach for responding to a report of an active shooter incident. As developed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, this one-hour presentation by Emergency Management staff reviews the options of Run, Hide and Fight by citing actual case studies of incidents.
-
Stop the Bleed training: This training was created to reduce fatalities at active shooter and mass casualty incidents. It was found that the primary loss of life in these incidents was the loss of blood. In response, the American College of Surgeons developed the Stop the Bleed® program. In this one-hour course, participants are instructed on methods to stop bleeding at active shooter and mass casualty incidents.
- Threat Assessment Response Team: This multidisciplinary team is responsible for facilitating the reporting of troubling behaviors, reviewing threat assessment processes and cases, developing and implementing coordinated interventions, monitoring situations, and providing feedback on observed behaviors. The team comprises campus personnel who have the authority and decisionmaking ability in dealing with troubling situations. Their ability to make appropriate decisions in identifying and implementing effective strategies is critical to reducing the risk of harm.
- All-Hazard Assessments: This service is offered in an effort to provide occupants a chance to review their area (offices, classrooms and work spaces) to identify safety concerns. An assessment team member will help identify concerns and risks unique to each area and discuss options to enhance safety. Often, a simple change in furniture layout can make all the difference.

Run, Hide, Fight
The following guidelines are intended to reduce your personal risk in the unlikely event that an active shooter incident occurs on campus.
- Have an escape route and plan in mind.
- Evacuate regardless of whether others agree to follow.
- Leave your belongings behind (take your cell phone).
- Help others escape, if possible.
- Lock the door.
- Blockade the door with heavy furniture.
- Silence your cell phone.
- Turn off any source of noise, such as radios and TVs.
- Spread out and hide behind large items, such as cabinets and desks.
- Develop a plan of action should the active shooter enter.
- Remain quiet.
If your only option is to defend yourself, then as a last resort, and only when your life is in imminent danger, attempt to disrupt or incapacitate the active shooter by:
- Acting as aggressively as possible against the suspect.
- Throwing items and improvising weapons.
- Yelling.
- Committing to your actions.
