Fires & Chemical Spills

See Smoke or Fire? Use RACE

  • Rescue those in immediate danger.
  • Alarm by activating the fire pull station.
  • Contain the fire by closing all doors and windows.
  • Extinguish, if possible, or Evacuate if you cannot extinguish.

Report and Evacuate

  • Call 402-559-5555 to report an emergency.
  • Refer to your building emergency action plan for specific evacuation routes and assembly areas.
  • Never use an elevator when evacuating.
  • If your clothes catch on fire: stop, drop and roll.
  • If you are caught in smoke, drop to your knees and crawl below the smoke level.
  • If you are trapped in a room, place cloth and material (wet if water is readily available) under the door to prevent smoke from entering.
  • Retreat and close as many doors as possible between you and the fire.
  • Signal for help.

Chemical Spills

Know the terms for emergencies involving chemical spills. In an emergency, call 402-559-5555 24 hours a day.

Chemical spills that are not reasonably expected to be a threat to human health or the environment. They can be cleaned up by personnel in the area of the spill.
A chemical spill that is controllable but beyond the capabilities of personnel in the area of the spill. In these cases, contact UNMC Environmental Health & Safety at 402-559-6356 from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. After hours or on weekends, please call UNMC Police and Public Safety, 402-559-5555.
These chemical spills may pose a threat to human health and the environment, and personnel in the vicinity are not able to contain the spill. Call 402-559-555 24 hours a day to report the emergency.
