Energy Curtailment
Each summer, hot and humid weather puts extra stress on campus energy systems. On curtailment days, the med center asks everyone to reduce unnecessary energy use.
Together, this is how we Conserve to Serve.
What Is Energy Curtailment?
Energy curtailment means reducing non-essential energy use during periods of peak demand.
The med center typically sees peak demand on the hottest days of summer, when the entire Omaha grid is under stress.
What You Can Do
- Turn off lights in empty areas.
- Close blinds, shades and curtains.
- Keep doors closed and open manually when possible.
- Shut the fume hood sash.
- Unplug or turn off equipment not in use.
- Take the stairs if possible.
Why It Matters
When the med center conserves energy together, we:
- Protect the systems that keep patients safe and research running.
- Support a healthier environment for the campus community.
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- Lower utility costs — the rate the med center pays for electricity is set by the single highest demand moment of each month.
- Support the med center’s goal of net zero emissions by 2030.
