The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) continues its commitment to advancing the care of patients with end-stage organ disease and solid organ transplantation (SOT). As one of the region’s leading transplant centers, UNMC brings together experts from across multiple specialties to explore the evolving landscape of transplantation and improve outcomes through collaborative, multidisciplinary care. The theme of the 2027 Transplant Symposium is "From End-Stage Management to Transplant Reality.” Through keynote presentations, multidisciplinary panels, and organ-specific breakout sessions, the symposium will examine the continuum of transplant care, focusing on the pre-transplant management of our patients ranging from the referral and candidate evaluation through transplantation and long-term recipient management.
This year's symposium will feature expert-led presentations, patient perspectives, and interactive discussions focused on:
- Early identification and referral of transplant candidates
- Patient readiness and optimization for transplantation
- Organ donation, allocation, and donor utilization strategies
- Innovations in transplant surgery and transplant oncology
- Multidisciplinary selection and waitlist management
- Infectious disease challenges in transplantation
- Immunosuppression and long-term graft preservation
- Enhancing equity, access, and patient-centered care
- Post-transplant management and community integration
- Patient and donor experiences across the transplant journey
Designed for physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, social workers, transplant coordinators, and other healthcare professionals involved in transplant care, this symposium promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and provides practical, evidence-based strategies to optimize the care of patients before, during, and after transplantation.
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
- Evaluate and implement standardized, evidence-based clinical triggers, scoring systems, and holistic health metrics (including frailty and nutrition status) to optimize the medical management of advanced organ failure and ensure the timely, appropriate referral of solid organ transplant candidates.
- Analyze the impact of evolving organ allocations policies, donor utilization strategies (such as DCD and marginal grafts), and technological innovations like machine perfusion on allograft availability, waitlist logistics, and perioperative outcomes.
- Formulate comprehensive, long-term post-transplant care plans that effectively balance individualized immunosuppression regimens with the prevention and management of chronic metabolic, infectious, and oncologic complications through collaborative, multidisciplinary follow-up.
In support of improving patient care, University of Nebraska Medical Center is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
