Director's Message

Joann B. Sweasy, PhD, director of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center

I am privileged to direct the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, an organization with a rich history that currently has more than 110 dedicated members conducting basic, translational, clinical and population science research.

At the forefront of cancer research and care in Nebraska for four decades,
the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center has been continuously funded by its Cancer Center Support Grant from the National Cancer Institute since 1984. It is the only NCI-designated cancer center in the state with that prestigious designation, and one of only 72 in the entire nation. The NCI recognizes centers around the country that meet rigorous standards for transdisciplinary, state-of-the-art research focused on developing new and better approaches to preventing, diagnosing and treating cancer.

Nebraska is fortunate to be made up of a vibrant blend of both rural and urban communities. The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center is a cancer center for the entire state. Beyond the complexities of cancer itself, identifying and serving the needs of Nebraska’s entire population is of paramount importance. The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center collaborates with its community partners on basic, translational, clinical and population sciences research and in conducting cancer prevention and control activities to reduce the cancer burden within Nebraska’s many culturally rich and rural communities.

Twenty-first century cancer research and cancer care are ever evolving, with innovative breakthroughs happening every day. I could not be more excited to lead the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center during this amazing time of cancer research and care. I invite you to learn more about our center.

Sincerely,
