Radiation Safety Training

The State of Nebraska regulations and conditions of the UNMC radioactive material license dictate training requirements to work with ionizing radiation sources.

The extent of training will vary upon the type and frequency of radiation used.

Radiation Safety training requirements are based upon worker category type. For most workers, initial and annual refresher training are required.

Ancillary Personnel

Required
All individuals who may enter rooms/areas where radioactive material or radiation is used. Includes but is not limited to the following individuals in these departments: Environmental Services, Public Safety, Facilities Managements and Planning, Comparative Medicine, and Laboratory Assistants.

Authorized Users (AU)

Required
All researchers who have been granted a UNMC radioactive material license by the Radiation Safety Committee to work with radioactive material.

Required
Individuals working under an Authorized User (AU) that are authorized to use radioactive material under the AU's license.

Individuals authorized to operate x-ray diffraction units.

FrequencyInitial and annually. Initial training also includes documenting 20 hours of appropriate training with X-ray diffraction researcher.
