About Dr. Liu

Howard Liu, MD, MBA, is a psychiatrist, professor, father of school-aged kids, and the chair of the UNMC Dept. of Psychiatry.  He joined UNMC/NM in 2009 and has been a student of leadership, serving as the Director and then Assistant Vice Chancellor for Faculty Development from 2013-2018. He completed the iLEAD Program in 2013 and an Executive MBA in Health Administration at the University of Colorado Business School in 2019. He has national leadership experience as past president of the Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry and is an award-winning educator, an advocate for gender equity and a frequent speaker on the professional use of social media. Howard believes that growth is always possible, pivots can be strategic, and that leaders are responsible for culture. Howard's coaching process is strengths-based and reflective. He uses his skills as a psychiatrist to listen with intention and ask questions to empower individuals to discover their own solutions.
