Weekly Journal Club
Each week the CSR holds an hour-long journal club attended by all students, fellows, technologists and faculty. All participants, on a rotating basis, have an opportunity to choose and present the journal for the week.
Work in Progress (WIP) Meetings
WIP meetings are held once a month with participants from the CSR. Typically, each laboratory presents unpublished data by a pre- or post-doctoral student to receive feedback or relevant ideas.
International Conference on Gram-Positive Pathogens
The CSR initiated a new conference called the International Conference on Gram-Positive Pathogens in 2006. The conference is held in autumn in Omaha every other year. This conference focuses on all aspects of Gram-positive pathogens, from physiology to pathogenesis. These conferences provide excellent opportunities for pre-doctoral students to give oral presentations.
Other Scientific Meetings
Students in the SBTP also typically have an opportunity to present their research at the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) General Meeting and their Biofilms meeting, Wind River conference on Prokaryotic Biology, and the Gordon Research Conference on Staphylococcal Disease.
CSR Research Retreat
The CSR has research retreats once a year where all investigators have an opportunity to present their research to the group orally. All faculty, students, and technologists attend this event, which is typically held at the Lied Lodge in Nebraska City, NE.
Basic Science Seminar Series
Many excellent seminar speakers have presented their work at the Departmental Basic Science Seminar Series. This series is held every other week during the fall and spring semesters. Recent speakers for the 2014-2015 sessions have included Elizabeth A. Grice, PhD, University of Pennsylvania; Blake Wiedenheft, PhD, Montana State University; Victor Huber PhD, University of South Dakota; Katherine P. Lemon, MD, PhD, The Forsyth Institute; Tod Merkel, PhD, Food and Drug Administration; Diane R. Bielenberg, PhD, Harvard Medical School; Carol Fassbinder-Orth, PhD, Creighton University; and Simon J. Foster, PhD, University of Sheffield, United Kingdom. This seminar series is tied directly to PAMM 992 Advanced Topics in Microbiology, which is the pre-doctoral students’ journal club course. The students have an opportunity to discuss papers that have been recently published by the upcoming speaker in PAMM 992; this gives the students time to think of thoughtful questions for the speaker.
