Admission Requirements

Enrollment in the entry to practice program is limited and competitive. The admissions committee, composed of program faculty and administration, evaluates the qualifications of each applicant, and makes the final selections for admission.

Academic Criteria

  • Successful completion of a minimum of 90 semester credit hours of transferable credit prior to program start.
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 is required at the time of application submission.
  • A minimum prerequisite GPA of 2.75 is required at the time of application submission.
  • Completion of prerequisite courses (listed below)
  • Successful completion of transferable credit means:
    • Completed at an institution of higher learning accredited by an organization recognized by both the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education, such as regionally accredited institutions.
    • Completed at a college-level or above (remedial courses not accepted).
    • Completed with a letter grade of “C-“ or above [Exceptions to this policy due to COVID-19]

Conversation Time

Applicants must complete one conversation with a Respiratory Therapist and one additional activity. Information about your conversation and activity will be required in the online application. More details about these requirements on Respiratory Care Exploration Activities.

International Applicants

The program cannot currently admit international students who require F-1 Visa sponsorship with a form I-20. Please check back to this webpage for updated information before submitting an application.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

UNMC does not require or utilize scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) for admission to the Master of Respiratory Care program.

Required Undergraduate Prerequisites

Biological Sciences
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology I with Lab (4 credits)
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology II with Lab (4 credits)
  • NOTE: Anatomy and Physiology requirements can be fulfilled by a series of two separate anatomy and physiology courses or a series of combined anatomy and physiology courses.
  • Microbiology with Lab (4 credits)
Physical Sciences
  • General Chemistry with Lab (4 credits)
  • Physics with Lab (4 credits)
Mathematics
  • College Algebra (3 credits)
Medical Terminology
  • Either a college/university course or a certificate program is acceptable
    • UNMC offers a medical terminology course (CAHP 310), which meets this requirement. Taking this course at UNMC is not a preference factor for admission.
Electives
  • Since applicants must complete a minimum of 90 transferable semester credit hours prior to matriculation, including the specific prerequisites listed above, they may use electives to reach this requirement.
  • Applicants who complete a bachelor’s degree prior to matriculation will satisfy this requirement.
