Bring Your Own Device

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need to have my own computer device?
Technology has become an essential part of nursing education. To be able to live, learn and work successfully in our information-rich society, this requirement allows you to utilize technology effectively. New students starting classes will be required to bring their own wireless computing device to school for use in classes and clinical settings.
How can I afford my own device?
The Financial Aid Office will adjust the student's cost of attendance, up to $2,500, for the purchase of computer/software/printer/warranties. The purchase must be made in the student’s name. Purchases made on a parent’s credit card cannot be accepted for a cost of attendance adjustment. Students should contact the financial aid office before purchasing items beyond basic College of Nursing requirements. Students must document the purchase/cost of the computer by providing a receipt of purchase. Students are required to submit this purchase/cost documentation using the Financial Aid Office Special Circumstances Form. Students will be offered additional student loan funds to fund the reimbursement cost of the computer. The loan funds will not be provided to purchase the computer--the loan funds will be provided to reimburse the student for the purchase. If you have additional questions please contact the Financial Aid Office.
Can my BYOD be a mobile device, such as a cell phone or tablet?
Although mobile devices and tablets are extremely convenient, and can do many functions that will be needed for classroom activities and assignment, at this time, they are not compatible with testing. You are, however, welcome to use a mobile device to supplement your experiences. You will not be able to use a mobile device alone as a BYOD.
How do I get my computer fixed if it is broken?
You will be responsible for maintaining and repairing any device that you bring to school.

Although Microsoft Exchange is the email server, and its associated client application is Microsoft Outlook, it is not necessary to have Microsoft Outlook configured to receive email. You will, in most cases, be able to access your email from its web interface. Many students access their UNMC email via their smart phones or smart devices.
How do I charge my device?
Charging stations are now available on each campus. Most mobile devices are supported. The university cannot guarantee enough electrical outlets will be available in all classrooms. Be sure to have your computer fully charged when going into a class or testing environment.
What kind of computer should I buy?

While we do not recommend specific models or devices, we strongly encourage you to buy a device that meets the College of Nursing computer requirements. Meeting the requirements ensures you have the greatest possible experience and access to the educational resources. Examples of how these devices will be utilized include but are not limited to taking class exams, notes, conducting literature review, and accessing class presentations and e-books. You will want to choose a device that works best for you.
