Dr. Sharp's interest involves attempting to determine if lymphomas have self-renewing, tumorigenic “stem” cells. One in three mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) side population (SP) cells were tumorigenic. In contrast, CD 133 MCL cells self-renewed but did not form tumors. Unlike CD133 cells, SP cells produced IL8.
