Admissions - Graduate Professional

Please read all instructions thoroughly.
 
Applicants complete an online application and provide supplemental materials in support of the application for program admission. The online application is completed through the Centralized Application Service for Nursing Programs. Applicants are responsible to ensure that the application is submitted by the published deadline and that all required documents are received in a timely manner. Applications and supplemental materials received by the published deadlines will be given full consideration. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Upon receipt of the completed application, all application and supplemental materials become the property of UNMC.

Eligibility to Apply

Graduated from accredited baccalaureate programs in nursing and must be legally licensed to practice nursing in one of the 50 states.

  • A BSN degree from an ACEN, CCNE or NLN accredited school of nursing. 
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for all undergraduate coursework.  
  • Proof of current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in one of the 50 states in the U.S. 
NursingCAS Application

The College of Nursing partners with NursingCAS. Please review the Applicant Help Center: NursingCAS Applicant Help Center.

The cost of the NursingCAS application is $80. You will declare a home campus on your application.

All application fees payable online by credit/debit card.

Personal Information

When you create your NursingCAS account, you will list an e-mail address. Be sure to manage your email account so that you receive emails from both NursingCAS and from UNMC. Check your e-mail frequently during the application period as that will be the primary form of communication from the college.

You do not need to provide ACT or SAT scores or your high school transcript.

Please review our policies regarding English as a second language and provide English proficiency scores if needed for graduate admissions.
Academic History

You will enter all of your college coursework in the Transcript Entry portion of your application. Gather your transcripts prior to entering your college coursework so your entry and transcripts match. Follow the NursingCAS instructions on how to enter your test credits.

Submit all official transcripts from each school you attended to NursingCAS directly. Follow the instructions under the Colleges Attended tab and use the NursingCAS transcript guide for more information.

Specialty Tracks

You may apply to only one program/specialty. Please take time to research the different degrees and specialties to decide which degree and/or specialty will fit your professional goals. We are glad to discuss this area with you.

Read all requirements and information provided by the College of Nursing. Please note, if you are admitted a $400 enrollment deposit is required at the time acceptance. The enrollment deposit is non-refundable and is credited on your first semester tuition payment.

Each applicant is asked to compose and then upload a Personal Statement to their NursingCAS application. The questions to be answered are specific to each program and are available on the NursingCAS application.

RN Experience by Track:

  • Adult-Gerontology Acute Care: One year of critical care experience as an RN required; two years of experience preferred.
  • Adult-Gerontology Primary Care: One year of experience (prefer 2000 hours) as an RN in a nursing clinical role or site (e.g., hospital, nursing facility or community nursing/home care).
  • Family: Prefer two years of experience as an RN.
  • Peds Primary: 2,000 hours of experience as an RN.
  • Peds Primary and Acute Care: 2,000 hours in acute care setting with critical care experience preferred.
  • Psych: One year of psychiatric nursing experience as an RN. Psychiatric experiences in rural health hospitals and clinics will be evaluated on an individual basis.
  • Women’s Health: Prefer one year of experience as an RN in any area of women’s health.
Required Information

Resume/CV – You are asked to upload your most current Resume/CV.

Personal Statement to answer four specific questions related to Leadership Experience, Self- Appraisal, Inclusion and Belonging, and Overcoming Barrriers. Each question should be approximately 500 words.

Publications/sample of written work –PhD program applicants are asked to upload examples of written work to include published research, an excerpt of a research project, or thesis from your previous master’s program. If you submit a co-authored publication, please include a statement detailing your percent of responsibility for work written.

You are required to provide three professional references. Only electronic references will be accepted. Please select the electronic option on the NursingCAS application form. You must be able to supply accurate email addresses for all three recommenders. They will receive and return the reference form electronically to NursingCAS. Suggested references may include faculty from your former nursing program, a manager from your current employer, or other professionals who have knowledge of your professional and academic capabilities.

Program Entry Requirements

Applicants who are offered and accept admission to a UNMC College of Nursing program are admitted pending final submission of items that will be requested. Such items will include:

  • proof of current health immunizations as outlined by UNMC Student Health
  • a criminal history and abuse/neglect background check
  • a copy of a current BLS certification
  • completion of UNMC required compliance trainings
  • proof of a current unencumbered RN license

The offer of admission will be withdrawn for students who do not comply with all enrollment criteria by the required deadline.
