Foundational Driving

Young man in a striped shirt stands next to a car with the driver side door open.

The metro area has many on-the-road driving programs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, but none that address the skills required prior to getting behind the wheel.

The Department of Occupational Therapy's Foundational Driving Program at the Munroe-Meyer Institute was created after many discussions with patients, parents, and community partners on the urgent need for further support in this area.

A young adult rides on a city bus, standing in the aisle and holding onto an overhead handle.

Another component to this innovative program is a community mobility track. This track is designed for people who may not be safe to drive independently, but are hoping to navigate rideshares, public transportation, and large campuses. We found this to be a gap in services that our occupational therapy team sought out the research and resources to address these community needs.

Pathways are aimed at exploring independence and building confidence with navigating the community.
