Technical Standards

Purpose

Applicants and students should possess the following skills and abilities in order to perform the required tasks and duties of the profession. If the help of compensatory technique or devices are required, the program and/or university will make reasonable accommodations. Those individuals requesting disability accommodations must do so by submitting a disability accommodation request with UNMC Student Success.

Technical Standards Required

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Safety Standards

Students cannot have:

  • Contraindicated biomedical devices, implants and materials (e.g. pacemaker)
  • Ferromagnetic contraindicated biomedical devices, implants and materials (e.g. aneurysm clip)
  • Accidental ferromagnetic implanted objects and/or materials (e.g. shrapnel in eyes)
  • Contraindicated devices assisting in routine tasks (e.g. hearing aids)
  • Phobias that would not allow them to perform routine tasks and care in the healthcare environment

Students must have the following:

Communication Skills
  • Provide effective written and oral communication with patients and healthcare professionals.
Visual/Auditory Perception

Adequate eyesight to:

  • Report visual observations of patients and equipment operation as well as to read the patient’s records and medical information relevant to the procedure being performed.
  • Visually monitor patients in dimmed light.
  • Vision must be adequate to properly align laser lights and crosshairs on patients in a dimmed light environment.
  • Read MRI computer screen/imaging equipment for an extended period of time.
  • Evaluate MRI images for appropriate image quality.
    • Ability to distinguish shades of gray/color.

Adequate hearing to:

  • Be able to respond to the needs of patients and healthcare professionals.
  • Initiate timely response to audible alarms and signals.
Physical/Motor Abilities

Sufficient strength and fine motor coordination to:

  • Lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Lift 20 pounds shoulder level and above.
  • Pull and push heavy objects.
  • Assist in moving patients from stretcher, wheelchair, or bed to and from MRI table.
  • Manipulate MRI coils/table and accessory equipment.
Cognitive/Interpersonal Skills
  • Ability to communicate information and instructions in clear and concise manner to patients and medical personnel.
    • Read and apply appropriate instructions located in medical records, computer monitors, and notes.
    • Interact compassionately and empathetically with patients.
    • Provide patient/public education related to MRI procedures and safety.
  • Understand and apply clinical instructions given by supervising professionals.
  • Possess the mental and emotional stability to effectively handle stressful situations.
  • Possess sufficient problem-solving skills to include measuring, calculating, reasoning, analyzing, and evaluating with the ability to perform the necessary skills in a timely fashion.
These standards identify the requirements for admission, retention and graduation from the program. It is the responsibility of the student with disabilities to request those accommodations that he/she feels are reasonable and are needed to execute the essential functions described.
