Curling

Students engage in curling on an ice skating rink

Curling is quite possibly the most unique recreational activity offered at UNMC. In curling, teams slide 40-pound granite stones from one side of the rink, called the hack, across the ice toward a scoring area at the opposite side, called the house. Each round (or end), players take turns delivering their stones by pushing them from the hack. As each stone travels across the ice, teammates influence the path and speed of the stone by sweeping the ice just in front of it. Once both teams have thrown all four of their stones, scoring is determined for that end. Games are made up of four ends and generally last between 20 and 30 minutes.

No skates are needed, all equipment is provided, and no experience is necessary to play. Teams are co-recreational, meaning there must be at least one female player on the ice at all times for each team.

The winter 2023 season begins on November 29 with leagues playing on Wednesday nights from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The registration deadline is Monday, November 20.
