Center for Hematological Malignancies Research

The James O. Armitage Center for Hematological Malignancies Research (JOACHMR) is composed of interdisciplinary teams of renowned hematologists, oncologists, hematopathologists, and basic science investigators, working together to diagnose and treat leukemias, lymphomas, and multiple myelomas. They are actively involved in basic, translational and clinical research related to hematological malignancies. JOACHMR has a large computerized clinical database, including pathology and genetic information on lymphoma cases as well as a large tissue bank of frozen lymphoma specimens and normal lymphoid tissues, which is an invaluable resource for the work of the center.

Missions

Research

Leverage a world-class clinical research center in hematological malignancies and increase extramural funding through innovative and collaborative research

Academic

Foster the academic growth of young professionals and train the next generation of oncologists, scientists and physician-scientists

Clinical

Development of personalized medicine and targeted therapy for hematological malignancies through the Clinical Oncogenomics Proposal for the Buffett Cancer Center; and expanding the scope of clinical trials in hematological malignancies through clinical and translational research

Fitting Tribute

Dr. Armitage started the lymphoma and stem cell transplant programs at UNMC in the early 1980s. UNMC was one of the first transplant centers to pioneer the use of peripheral blood stem cells for use in the transplant, which has now become the standard of care at all centers worldwide. Dr. Armitage was a major part of this early discovery and published many of the early lymphoma peripheral blood stem cell transplant studies. In addition, he has also been a major contributor to the research and literature evaluating the biology and classification of lymphomas as well as many of the early clinical trials with new agents for the treatment of lymphoma. These activities have put UNMC at the top of the list for institutions that specialize in lymphoma research.
