Dr. Howard Liu is a psychiatrist, educator, workforce expert, social media innovator, and global medical education champion at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). He serves as the Chair and Professor with Tenure of the UNMC Department of Psychiatry and the Co-chair of the World Psychiatric Association’s Special Interest Group on Medical Students. He serves on the editorial advisory board for Psychiatric News and is a past chair of the American Psychiatric Association’s Council on Communications. He is also a Past President of the Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry (ADMSEP). He guest-edited a special issue on Academic Psychiatry in the Age of Artificial Intelligence in 2025. Nationally and internationally, Dr. Liu has presented over 100 peer-reviewed abstracts and is a frequently invited speaker on mental health, social media, and psychiatric education. He is past chair of the board for an Omaha nonprofit, Radius, serving justice-involved youth, and previously served on the National Advisory Council for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Clinical Scholars Program. He is a recipient of numerous awards for education and leadership, including the Award for Creativity in Psychiatric Education from the American College of Psychiatrists (ACP), the Innovation Award from the Annapolis Coalition on the Behavioral Health Workforce, and Honorary Membership for Excellence in Service to the World Psychiatric Association (WPA).
