Medical Students: Experience the Emergency Medicine Student Rotation

image1 image2 image3 image4

Medical students from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and visiting students from other medical colleges can enroll in our four-week, fourth-year elective rotation. Third-year medical students may also choose to spend two weeks of their general surgery rotation in the emergency department. All students will work shifts in the emergency department at Nebraska Medical Center. Students are also required to attend weekly M&M conferences with the EM residents and faculty. They are invited to attend all resident lectures as well. Features of the rotation include a ground EMS ride-along, an ultrasound workshop, a simulation workshop using SimMan, a splint lab and toxicology lectures.

Our department is actively involved in facilitating skills labs, lectures, and shadowing experience for first and second-year medical students through the Emergency Medicine Interest Group. We also are very fortunate to be involved in the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP) where 12 medical universities nationally are chosen to participate and provide exposure to both medical and dental career options. Educational experiences are also provided to UNMC physician assistant students as well as PA students from Offutt Air Force Base.
